On seeing valentines day through another’s eyes

I don’t believe in love
I’ve heard it said
I haven’t in years
I’m jaded and syndical and logical
Love is naught
For any of these

I don’t believe in love
Seen the heartache and pain
Watched broken hearts
Broken lives
Broken marriages
Broken dreams

I don’t believe in love
And yet this year I see
The pink in the stores
The I love you
Here and there and everywhere
The hearts and flowers
The stuffed pets and cards
The night bird songs and sighs
No regrets

I don’t believe
In the silliness
Of romance and magic
Of stardust and songs
Of happily ever after
Not in any silly giggly way
At least, this year,
Not just for a day.
