sit on the edge
of the emptying nest
and look
back into the nest
longing
to crawl back in
to hide
beneath the downy fluff
that is what
remains of the old definition
and hide
and HIDE
and look
out over the edge
into the great beyond
where the fledgelings have escaped
and found their own definitions
what is the color
that defines
what is the song
that calls
what purpose
now
that the purpose is grown
dare I try
my fragile wings
the question irritates
an unscratchable itch
what if I fail
what if I don’t
all of the questions
that I helped them through
I now re-face on my own.
